Harriet Tubman

Harriet Tubman was born on March, 1822 and died on March 10th, 1913. She was a slave for lots of different masters. They would beat her a lot. One time, she was beaten with a heavy weight, and received a very bad head wound. It was so bad that it caused seizures. It also caused her to have vivid dreams. Because she was a very strong christian, she believed that they were revelations from God.

Harriet was responsible for secretly helping many slaves escape to freedom. Many of them were her family members. She had them go to Canada because they weren't allowed to have slaves there. She was the first woman to guide an armed expedition, during the civil war. Because of her actions, about 700 slaves were freed.

She later retired, and died of pneumonia in a resting home for African Americans. One that she helped found many years before.
